Review: I loved the way the book started out, with a phone call from a unknown yet soon remembered woman. From there, it only got better.
Bragg is a sort of noir character in a modern world. He eschews cell phones and prefers to do his detective work hands-on rather than via the internet. That’s how he ends up investigating a serial killer at a state park in Northern California. What I don’t understand is why every woman seems to want him. He seems to be a bit of a mess, emotionally speaking, yet every woman in the book is drawn to him. I don’t know if that was the author’s intent – to make him a roguish sort that attracts women without effort – or if it was perhaps a subconscious part of the author that thought that’s how detectives should be.
The writing is superb. One twist and turn after another. I’m not sure how I missed this series to begin with but I’m definitely going back and picking it up. I’d like to see how Bragg got his start and see how he progresses through the years. If the rest are anything like Die for Me, I won’t be disappointed.
